It’s not only the cats slinking through the dark…
Twenty-two-year-old Joanna Shirley is the only daughter and child of Lady and Sir Robert Shirley and has a great affinity for languages and accents.
In fact, while skiing once in Austria, her German was so good that she was arrested by the Gestapo on suspicion of being a spy...
But what once seemed a funny story, is now made very much more alarming with rumours that Hitler is edging his way to the Polish border and, feeling that now she must earn her own keep, Joanna moves to London.
She soon gets a job at an advertisement firm, which, like London as a whole, is full of strange characters.
Joanna soon makes a particular impression on a certain Colonel Seymour – especially with her proficiency in French and German.
The colonel wants to know if she’s interested in something a little more profitable and discreet than a receptionist.
All she has to do is report back about a group of Austrian refugees…
But a sinister darkness is creeping over Europe, and Joanna finds herself unable to recognise the world she once knew so well…
A moving and thrilling tale,At Dusk, All Cats Are Grey offers a comic and pathos-filled glimpse into a world readying itself for the Second Great War.

Could have used a good edit before being published -- especially the German (which is especially embarrassing because the main character is supposed to be a language genius). When the title of the book appears in the text, it's spelled differently than the book title (gray/grey). Good story, but needs work.Product details

At Dusk All Cats are Grey edition by Jerrard Tickell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Jerrard Tickell writes with a beautiful, light touch. His descriptions of English pre-WWII life are almost lyrical. And he knows how to draw charters that come alive.
From 22 year-old Joanna with her facility for languages that likely will propel her into spy craft in the next book, to the cad twice her age who attempts - unsuccessfully - to seduce her as the two work for a prosperous advertising agency.
Tickell portrays the advertising business with humor and insight.
The book is interesting, not exciting, as it describes how England prepares itself in fits and starts for the coming war with Hitler’s Germany.
A fun read and I appreciated the review copy.
In depth characters give this Tory a richness not expected in a book like this but I enjoyed it all the same and have already purchased another by Tickell!
Interesting.
Portrays how England didn't want war, and a young working woman's view of the changes. Really enjoyed it.
Could have used a good edit before being published -- especially the German (which is especially embarrassing because the main character is supposed to be a language genius). When the title of the book appears in the text, it's spelled differently than the book title (gray/grey). Good story, but needs work.
